रवीन्द्रनाथ Tagore (7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941) को गुरुदेव के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। वे विश्वविख्यात कवि, साहित्यकार, दार्शनिक और भारतीय साहित्य के एकमात्र नोबल पुरस्कार विजेता हैं। बांग्ला साहित्य के माध्यम से भारतीय सांस्कृतिक चेतना में नयी जान फूँकने वाले युगदृष्टा थे। वे एशिया के प्रथम नोबेल पुरस्कार सम्मानित व्यक्ति हैं। वे एकमात्र कवि हैं जिसकी दो रचनाएँ दो देशों का राष्ट्रगान बनीं - भारत का राष्ट्र-गान जन गण मन और बाँग्लादेश का राष्ट्रीय गान आमार सोनार बाँग्ला गुरुदेव की ही रचनाएँ हैं।

जीवन

रवीन्द्रनाथ ठाकुर का जन्म देवेन्द्रनाथ टैगोर और शारदा देवी के सन्तान के रूप में ७ मई, १८६१ को कोलकाता के जोड़ासाँको ठाकुरबाड़ी में हुआ। उनकी स्कूल की पढ़ाई प्रतिष्ठित सेंट जेवियर स्कूल में हुई। उन्होंने बैरिस्टर बनने की चाहत में 1989 में इंग्लैंड के ब्रिजटोन में पब्लिक स्कूल में नाम दर्ज कराया। उन्होंने लन्दन विश्वविद्यालय में कानून का अध्ययन किया लेकिन 1990 में बिना डिग्री हासिल किए ही स्वदेश वापस आ गए। सन् 1993 में मृणालिनी देवी के साथ उनकाअ विवाह हुआ।

रचनाधर्मी

बचपन से ही उनकी कविता, छन्द और भाषा में अद्भुत प्रतिभा का आभास लोगों को मिलने लगा था। उन्होंने पहली कविता आठ साल की उम्र में लिखी थी और 1877 में केवल सोलह साल की उम्र में उनकी लघुकथा प्रकाशित हुई थी। भारतीय सांस्कृतिक चेतना में नई जान फूँकने वाले युगदृष्टा टैगोर के सृजन संसार में गीतांजलि, पूरबी प्रवाहिनी, शिशु भोलानाथ, महुआ, वनवाणी, परिशेष, पुनश्च, वीथिका शेषलेखा, चोखेरबाली, कणिका, नैवेद्य मायेर खेला और क्षणिका आदि शामिल हैं। देश और विदेश के सारे साहित्य, दर्शन, संस्कृति आदि उन्होंने आहरण करके अपने अन्दर समेट लिए थे। पिता के ब्रह्म-समाजी के होने के कारण वे भी ब्रह्म-समाजी थे। पर अपनी रचनाओं व कर्म के द्वारा उन्होंने सनातन धर्म को भी आगे बढ़ाया।
मनुष्य और ईश्वर के बीच जो चिरस्थायी सम्पर्क है, उनकी रचनाओं के अन्दर वह अलग-अलग रूपों में उभर आता है। साहित्य की शायद ही ऐसी कोई शाखा हो, जिनमें उनकी रचना न हो - कविता, गान, कथा, उपन्यास, नाटक, प्रबन्ध, शिल्पकला - सभी विधाओं में उन्होंने रचना की। उनकी प्रकाशित कृतियों में - गीतांजली, गीताली, गीतिमाल्य, कथा ओ कहानी, शिशु, शिशु भोलानाथ, कणिका, क्षणिका, खेया आदि प्रमुख हैं। उन्होंने कुछ पुस्तकों का अंग्रेजी में अनुवाद भी किया। अँग्रेज़ी अनुवाद के बाद उनकी प्रतिभा पूरे विश्व में फैली।

शान्तिनिकेतन

टैगोर को बचपन से ही प्रकृति का सान्निध्य बहुत भाता था। वह हमेशा सोचा करते थे कि प्रकृति के सानिध्य में ही विद्यार्थियों को अध्ययन करना चाहिए। इसी सोच को मूर्तरूप देने के लिए वह 1901 में सियालदह छोड़कर आश्रम की स्थापना करने के लिए शान्तिनिकेतन आ गए। प्रकृति के सान्निध्य में पेड़ों, बगीचों और एक लाइब्रेरी के साथ टैगोर ने शान्तिनिकेतन की स्थापना की।

रवीन्द्र संगीत

टैगोर ने करीब 2,230 गीतों की रचना की। रवींद्र संगीत बाँग्ला संस्कृति का अभिन्न अंग है। टैगोर के संगीत को उनके साहित्य से अलग नहीं किया जा सकता। उनकी अधिकतर रचनाएँ तो अब उनके गीतों में शामिल हो चुकी हैं। हिंदुस्तानी शास्त्रीय संगीत की ठुमरी शैली से प्रभावित ये गीत मानवीय भावनाओं के अलग-अलग रंग प्रस्तुत करते हैं।
अलग-अलग रागों में गुरुदेव के गीत यह आभास कराते हैं मानो उनकी रचना उस राग विशेष के लिए ही की गई थी। प्रकृति के प्रति गहरा लगाव रखने वाला यह प्रकृति प्रेमी ऐसा एकमात्र व्यक्ति है जिसने दो देशों के लिए राष्ट्रगान लिखा।

दर्शन

गुरुदेव ने जीवन के अंतिम दिनों में चित्र बनाना शुरू किया। इसमें युग का संशय, मोह, क्लान्ति और निराशा के स्वर प्रकट हुए हैं। मनुष्य और ईश्वर के बीच जो चिरस्थायी सम्पर्क है उनकी रचनाओं में वह अलग-अलग रूपों में उभरकर सामने आया। टैगोर और महात्मा गान्धी के बीच राष्ट्रीयता और मानवता को लेकर हमेशा वैचारिक मतभेद रहा। जहां गान्धी पहले पायदान पर राष्ट्रवाद को रखते थे, वहीं टैगोर मानवता को राष्ट्रवाद से अधिक महत्व देते थे। लेकिन दोनों एक दूसरे का बहुत अधिक सम्मान करते थे। टैगोर ने गान्धीजी को महात्मा का विशेषण दिया था। एक समय था जब शान्तिनिकेतन आर्थिक कमी से जूझ रहा था और गुरुदेव देश भर में नाटकों का मंचन करके धन संग्रह कर रहे थे। उस वक्त गान्धी जी ने टैगोर को 60 हजार रुपये के अनुदान का चेक दिया था।
जीवन के अन्तिम समय 7 अगस्त 1941 के कुछ समय पहले इलाज के लिए जब उन्हें शान्तिनिकेतन से कोलकाता ले जाया जा रहा था तो उनकी नातिन ने कहा कि आपको मालूम है हमारे यहाँ नया पावर हाउस बन रहा है। इसके जवाब में उन्होंने कहा कि हाँ पुराना आलोक चला जाएगा नए का आगमन होगा।

सम्मान

उनकी काव्यरचना गीतांजलि के लिये उन्हे सन् 1913 में साहित्य का नोबेल पुरस्कार मिला।
